Understanding CSAT — What the Paper Actually Tests
UPSC CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) is Paper 2 of Prelims. It has 80 questions for 200 marks with negative marking of 0.83 per wrong answer.

You need 66 marks. If you are strong in English and basic reasoning, CSAT requires minimal preparation. If maths is your weak point, you need a focused plan.
Week 1 — Diagnose Your Level
Before studying, take one full CSAT mock test cold — no preparation. This tells you exactly where you stand.
If you score 80+: CSAT is not your problem. Do one mock per week and focus entirely on Paper 1.
If you score 55–79: 30 days of focused preparation will get you comfortably above 66.
If you score below 55: You need to treat CSAT more seriously. Spend 90 minutes daily on it for 30 days.
Week 1 Focus: Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension is 35–40% of the paper and requires no prior knowledge — just practice. Strategy:
- Read the passage completely before reading the questions
- Answer only questions where the answer is explicitly stated or directly implied
- Skip passages that are very technical — come back if time permits
- Practice 3–4 passage sets daily from previous year papers
Week 2 — Reasoning and Analytical Ability
UPSC CSAT reasoning is not CAT-level. Most questions test basic logical thinking.

This is where most humanities background aspirants struggle. The good news: CSAT maths is Class 10 level. You do not need advanced mathematics.

Spend 45 minutes on maths each day. Do not go beyond these topics — CSAT does not test anything more advanced.
Week 4 — Data Interpretation + Full Mocks
Data Interpretation questions involve reading tables, bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs. The maths involved is simple — only addition, subtraction, percentages, and ratios.
DI Strategy
- Read the chart title and units before reading any question
- Do not calculate everything — calculate only what the question asks
- Use approximation wherever possible — exact answers are rarely needed
- These are the highest accuracy questions in CSAT for anyone who is careful
Mock Test Schedule for Week 4
- Day 1: Full CSAT mock test (timed — 2 hours)
- Day 2: Review every wrong answer
- Day 3: Targeted practice on weak section
- Day 4: Full CSAT mock test
- Day 5: Review + targeted practice
- Day 6: Final full mock test
- Day 7: Light revision only, no new practice
The CSAT Attempt Strategy on Exam Day
With 80 questions in 120 minutes, you have 90 seconds per question. Use this sequence:
- Attempt Comprehension first — highest accuracy, no calculation
- Attempt DI next — visual data, quick calculations
- Attempt Reasoning — pattern recognition, moderate time
- Attempt Maths last — most time-consuming
Negative Marking Rule
With 0.83 negative marking, the break-even is: attempt only if you can eliminate 2 of 4 options. A blind guess has a 25% chance of being right but the expected value is negative.
If you can eliminate 2 options, your success probability is 50% — the expected value becomes slightly positive. Attempt these.
